Hard Covers. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Art, Photos Ilustrador. 1st. This South Seas adventure began when the sailing ship Glide left Salem in 1829 to collect beche-de-mer, tortise shell and sandlewood in the Fiji Islands. Endicott was third made on the Glide and his narrative of the voyage provides the basis for this vivid account of Fijian life and trading at that time. After a series of experiences in the Fiji Group and other nearby islands, with his own ship wrecked the narrator eventually sailed home on a New England whaler, arriving back after being away 37 months and eight days. In additiion to his experiences as a trader Endicott also provides a graphic account of a cannibal feast he witnessed while in the Fijis. Also included is a vocabulary of some island words and phrases, plus a list of the officers and crew of the Glide. This book was the third of a series published by the Marine Research Society of Salem and in it Lawrence Waters Jenkins, assistant director of the Peabody Museum, Salem, compiled informative explanatory footnotes. Readers will be surprised at the large number of ships for to be found in South Pacific and adjacent waters in the early 1800s, many of them from the New England states. First edition of 1923, 76 pages, 13 b/w illustrations, photos and art, with postcard of a contemporary South Seas trading ship loosely enclosed. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles on fabric backstrip are VG with scattered small brown spots confined to top third front board, light damage at spine extremities and corners, internally VG+ with few foxing spots preliminary pages, no inscriptions.
