Original o primera edición
First edition, first impression. Pethick Lawrence's autobiography is "impressively fair-minded and perceptive" (ODNB) and provides an engaging insight into her time in the WSPU. This copy is from the library of distinguished suffrage collector Lesley Mees. Although well represented institutionally, this work is uncommon in commerce, especially so in the jacket. This work "valuably documents in its first eight chapters the influences moulding her life as child and young woman. Appropriately it devotes its largest section, eleven chapters, to the WSPU - and only two jejune chapters to the years after 1914" (ibid.). Although reticent about her married life in the work, Pethick Lawrence (1867-1954) dedicated her autobiography to her husband, the co-founder of Votes for Women Frederick Pethick Lawrence (1871-1961), "my unchanging comrade and my best friend" (ibid.). The Pethick Lawrences were heavily involved with the WSPU's inner circle; they sat on the organization's executive committee and contributed to its strategic decisions alongside the Pankhursts; however, they were later ousted from the WSPU due to disagreements regarding radical militant action. Provenance: with the bookplate of Dame Caroline Harriet Haslett (1895-1957), the English electrical engineer and women's rights campaigner, on the front pastedown. Haslett founded the Electrical Association for Women in 1924 and was the first secretary of the Women's Engineering Society. She "perceived the possibilities of engineering to raise the whole social status of women. She did valuable work in persuading engineering institutions to admit women to their examinations and not least in inducing employers to engage female labour. Dame Caroline never swerved from her high purpose of raising the social status of women" (ODNB). Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Spine ends and corners a little worn, white mark to front cover, edges and endleaves including title page lightly foxed; jacket soiled, closed tears and chips to extremities resulting in a little loss to text, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
