8vo. pp. vi, [ii], 127. Frontispiece of Alastair Ranaldson Macdonnell of Glengarry. 7 illustrations. Folding map. Original publisher's green cloth lettered gilt on spine. Three letters none of which are directly related to the book loosely inserted. They are addressed to Rev Ronald Burns, two from Rod. Matheson, dated March 16th 1920 and Jan 17th 1925 one from Peter Mcdonald dated 6. 1. 17. Also loosely inserted one page of information about Ewan Macphee, a Scottish outlaw written in Rod. Matheson's hand. Some of the content of the letters refers to Gaelic words and at one point Matheson criticises Ellice's description of Macphee's life. Edward Ellice the elder, a relative of the author, was an English merchant and politician who in 1830 purchased the Loch Quoich estate, made the acquaintance of Ewan MacPhee who had evaded capture by the authorities and was living on an island on the loch. Ellice and MacPhee coexisted harmoniously for some years until the latter's eventual arrest. Library stamp of Dominican Fathers, Edinburgh on title-page and rear endpaper. Some ink annotations in margins and index. Covers a little rubbed. VG. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good.
