Hardcover. Condición: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Pages in good condition. Images are bright and vivid. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Galileo and Newton, following on Copernicus and Kepler, finally robbed our earth of its claim to a central position in the universe. At the same time they introduced us to the idea of universal scientific law, by demonstrating that the behaviour of the moon, the earth and the other planets was due to the same force of gravity that makes a raindrop or a stone fall to the ground. So two centuries later Darwin, following on Lamarck and the other great naturalists, comparative anatomists and physiologists who preceded him, finally dethroned man from his claim to a unique position as Lord of Creation. At the same time he introduced us to the idea of universal law in biology, by demon- strating that all plants and animals, including man himself, share many basic similarities, and that the origin of the human species is due to the same general type of agency which is involved in producing a local variety of snail or a new breed of poultry: evolution operates as automatically as gravity.

Hardcover. Original grey cloth boards blue lettering to front board, blue pattern to top and bottom of front board, blue lettering to spine, under which is a representation of a blue clown balanced on a ball with a feather on his nose, generally clean and sound, the boards of book are slightly warped from age and use but this does not detract from the quality of its contents, decorative endpapers using blue and vivid pink clowns with pink trousers and blue sleeves arranged with hands and feet touching to make a pattern in squares, fun and effective, dedication on the preliminary title page 'To Derek with love from Doris Feb 1936, ' frontispiece is a full page Clown saying Hullo Children! , 192 pages, a series of stories about the Circus, the Contents headings are The Story of the Circus (colour) ; Clowns in Comedy; The Dick Turpin Act , Performing horses; sea-lions etc (colour) , Buckskin Joe; Jerry Jones's Jumbo, Carlotta to the Rescue; The Lure of the Tan; Aerial Acrobats, Wire Walkers etc(colour) ; Fifty Pieces of Gold; The Curse of the Elephant God; When the Tent Blew Down; Clowns, Trick Cyclists etc (colour) . Striking illustrations throughout, full page and within the text. The colours used are dramatic and bold everything we have come to associate with the razzle dazzle of the Circus. There is a very small amount of foxing but on the whole the contents is clean and easy to read, there is a small crease to the inside corner on page 177 which is a full page portrait in colour of a clown's face on the reverse side is a full page coloured picture of a lion in full roar. A scarce book which will appeal to those who remember circus entertainment from their childhood. Lavish style and dramatic design that epitimised the splenour and thrills of The Big Top, the Circus Ring with all its characters, artists and trainers. Size 11.0 x 8.5 inches approx. The pages of this book are fairly sturdy not flimsy. This book begins with the history of how Circuses began looking at some of the early names such as Captain Philip Astley and William Cody (better known as Buffalo Bill. This book offfers a variety of illustrations there is a fabulous double page illustration in colour of an air display plus more famliar images of bare-back horse riders. A dispay team of trained horses, seals, elephants clowns, a lavish show of pictures displaying a whole range of well known circus delights. Etc. At the time when this book was published people used Circuses as entertainment and as a chance to see exotic animals today this is no as popular because people want to see wild animals have normal freedom in their natural environment but the facts remain that that the Circuses performing artists have developed skills and talents that are astonishingly clever. No credit is given to the artwork but the printed signature on some of them seems to confirm that Wyndham Payne was the illustrator.
