Front cover embossed and lettered with gilt and black. 20 tipped-in full colour plates. Text and plates decorated with ornamental borders in green. Decorative endpapers. The spine has separated and while there are loose pages and the binding itself is precarious, all is present and remains clean and bright.

Illus. Willy Pogany Ilustrador. Original suede leather boards with gilt stamped decorative title upper board, tipped-in colour plates, sepia decorations each page, pp 94. N.d., c. 1920. The illustrator is not stated but is Willy Pogany. A small mark to the lower board, otherwise in very good condition. Omar Khayyam (1048 -1131), was known as the "Astronomer-Poet of Persia". His work was first translated from Persian to English in 1859 by Edward Fitzgerald. This edition illustrated by the well-known Hungarian artist Willy Pogany, and includes a WWII letter.

Illus. Willy Pogany Ilustrador. Original cloth boards, blindstamped decoration upper board, gilt decoration and lettering spine, tipped-in monochrome illustrated plates, decorated text, pp 92, ii. Loosely inserted is a letter, ". a slight remembrance of a splendid night" to a discreetly unnamed correspondent, on letterhead printed with a crown and "Headquarters" (military service?), dated 1943, from "Alan". His name halftitle page, previous owner's name and following day's date inscribed within illustration halftitle page. Very good condition in slightly chipped and protected dustjacket (recylced) from a contemporary (1936) Harrap publication, John F. Leeming's "Airdays" on verso. Beautifully illustrated with 16 full color tipped-in plates, with wonderful decorative borders and incidental illustrations all by Willy Pogany. 8vo, publisher s original deluxe gift binding of soft brown reverse calf, the upper cover decorated with an Arabesque design and stylized letters in gilt, enclosed in the original box. A fine fresh copy, highly uncommon in this condition, slight and very small split to the paper at the bottom of the front join of the pastedown to the free-fly. The box with light wear only. VERY HANDSOME ISSUE OF THE POGANY ILLUSTRATED RUBAIYAT. An exquisite volume in a beautiful publisher s gift binding. Based on Fitzgerald s translation, Pogany has filled each page with decorative Islamic style borders and decorations, accompanied by 16 full page tipped-in color plates. A fine example of Pogany s work, a true gem is such condition and in this unusual binding.

Each signed twice by Pogany, first on the limitation page, and then in pencil on the frontispiece etching. The work includes twelve tipped-in color plates (mounted on tipped in backings), numerous small tipped in decorative pieces, braced with printed head and tail pieces. This was Pogany's second book for Harrap, an earlier version of the same title printed in 1909 having established his reputation as a book illustrator. Pogany is said to have creditted Harrap for giving him his "first big chance." Minor shelf/edge wear, spine evenly sunned, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Full teal leather binding, four raised bands, gilt lettering and decorative elements, red ink decorative element, lightly marbled endpages, frontispiece, tipped in plates on mounts, teg. 4to. 173pp. Illus. (color and b/w plates). Signed twice by the artist. Numbered limited edition, this being 387 of 750.
