Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Rare. From the library of Lord Trenchard, one of the most important figures in the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF), with his signature and address in ink on the front free endpaper: Lord Trenchard, Kingston House South, Ennismore Gardens, S.W.7. Also includes, in what looks very like his distinctive handwriting, in pencil, three pages of notes on official paper (embossed with the UK's coat of arms) on FOOD: where it comes from, and why we are short. Also tipped in, on the back of an Army message form, is part of the timetable of a military education programme (this handwritten in a different hand). The book itself is - we must be honest - generally the kind of book one reads more for information than pleasure. It contains many very detailed tables of information. To quote the blurb: "The seventeenth issue of this standard work of reference, which is considerably enlarged, constitutes, in a certain measure - from the demographic, economic and financial standpoints - a history, in figures, of a world at war. The statistical tables, which are remarkably up to date, are accompanied by explanatory texts which will help the reader to interpret accurately the data given." The period covered is 1942-44. The preface notes wryly that "considerable difficulties were encountered in the preparation" of the year-book, owing to the number of belligerent or neutral countries who suspended or delayed the publication of the data wanted. The book itself is still in very good condition. There's some browning to the edges of the pages, owing to the postwar quality of paper used, and a couple of corners of the green boards are rubbed and worn, otherwise there are few marks of shelf wear and handling. The jacket is not in such a good state, being much more heavily worn around the edges and at the corners, and with some small tears repaired on the reverse. But, all in all, a rare survival, with a very distinguished previous owner. Please take a look at the photos to be supplied.
