Cloth. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. First edition. A very scarce first edition containing a memoir of Henry Duncan by his son George Duncan. The first edition of this affectionate biographical sketch of minister Henry Duncan by his son George Duncan. A very scarce volume in all editions.Henry Duncan was a Scottish minister of Ruthwell, author, and social reformer. He is known for being the founder of the world's first mutual savings bank in 1810, which would eventually form part of the Trustee Savings Bank. Committed to the cause, he had used his influence to procure the first act of parliament passed to procure the institutions, and spread the idea far and wide through speech, lectures, and pamphlets. This biography appeared two years after Henry's death, and explores his life and work from childhood until his death. With three appendix: 'English Story in a Nut-shell' by Dr D for the use of his young friends; an extract from a letter to John H Forbes vindicating the claim of the Ruthwell Savings Bank to the title of 'The Parent Institution;' and a notice of Dr Duncan's death from Savings Bank Magazine, furnished by John Maitland of Edinburgh National Security Savings Bank. With an illustrated title page. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. With some chipping to the head of the spine, and a minor loss to the tail. Lacking the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. With some offsetting to the illustrated title page, otherwise the pages are generally bright and very clean throughout. With some minor cockling to the gutters due to a tight binding. Very Good. book.
