FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. Large folio (42 x 30 cm). Half-title, title, advertisement+912 column; title+949 columns (2 per page)+[1]. Contemporary red morocco spines over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 228 engraved plates by Doré, ornamental details in the text by Giacomelli. Light rubbing to binding with some minor losses of leather, corners bruised, contents clean save for the odd occasional spot, generally a very good set. "Ouvrage capital et remarquable par son illustration: Doré était dans toute la maîtrise de son art" (Carteret). Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day, Mame of Tours Its original reception was truly remarkable A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once Editions appeared in almost every European country One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1867. This caused an even greater sensation than the French edition, and the demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré was clamorous" (Muir, 224). One of the great monuments of French illustrated book production in the 19th century. Doré's illustrations are renowned. Celebrated for their composition and finesse, they metamorphosed in larger format into dioramas and even are seen as having influenced early cinema, such as Cecil B. de Mille's Samson and Dalila. They required a large team - the leaf of 'Noms des coopérateurs' at end of vol. 2 names 27 engravers - to produce the wood-engravings from his original drawings. The text is presented in double column, the letterpress separated by central elaborate woodcut columns by H. Giacomelli. (Carteret III, 89-90.).

Contemporary full maroon morocco, sides ruled with prominent gilt-foliate border, spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Light rubbing to boards along extremities, a pair of ring marks on upper cover of vol.2, contents clean and crisp save for the very occasional spot, generally a superb copy in handsome contemporary bindings. "In the 1870s, The Doré Bible was perhaps the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world" (Malan, 81). Certainly, it proved a milestone in Doré's career. Doré's illustrations for the Bible (first published in French in 1866) were a great success, and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London which led to the founding of Doré Gallery in Bond Street, London.
