Illustrations: Blue and white seascape scene on each endpaper; b/w frontispiece; a b/w illustration at the head of each of the 17 chapters. The setting includes a lumber mill and a fishing station. The DJ states, "Older boys and girls will find here a tale of outdoor life and of Steve's love for Martha [his mother] and of the deep devotion of a boy for a dog. Grown-ups will appreciate the author's real understanding of a part of life on this continent." The front board has a thin line of cloth that is a little loosened. Also, it has spots of sheen loss from a water splash. Two thirds of the foredge is stained. A sixth of the bottom end of the text block is stained. An ink-stamp of an owner's name is on two front pages, the back endpaper, and on a label on the front endpaper. DJ: The top edge has chips and closed tears. The bottom edge is much less so. The letters on the spine panel have darkened. The spine panel has numerous faded spots; the front panel is a little thus. The front panel has a water stain on the reverse side. An ink-stamp of an owner's name is on the front panel and the back flap. Scans e-mailed upon request.
