Libro
Condición: Very good. unpaginated. Thick octavo. Bound in 18th century full vellum. Ornate black and red hand lettering, "Dante Comedin - 1544" on the spine. Handtied headcaps. All edges trimmed. Very light soiling of the vellum, with handling marks on front cover and spine. Four raised bands on both joints. String ties missing. Title page slightly soiled, with a brief name inked out. Leaves generally clean, some with signs of early tidemarks. A few marks and marginal notes in ink. Including 86 woodcuts (3 full page and 83 half-page), the last plate is missing, others in great condition. Two marginal diagrams. Overall in very good condition. In 1544, Alessandro Vellutello published an influential analysis of the Divine Comedy. Published over two hundred years after Dante's work was originally released, Vellutello contested many of the previous scholarly interpretations of the great poem. The edition Vellutello created also included beautiful woodcut illustrations that may have been made by the engraver Giovanni Britto. Another copy is in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Upon careful comparison with the copy housed in the National Library of France, it has been noted that this copy is missing the leaf containing the last plate (87th plate). However, it does include all other leaves and is in very good condition.
