Leather. Condición: Good Plus. this is the scarce Tauchnitz edition of two volumes which have been bound in one; published the same year (1849) as the true first UK edition which was published by Smith Ellder in three volumes; Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz was only 20 when he founded his publishing company in 1837 in Leipzig; he eventually, in 1842, commenced specializing in publishing in English many of the UK authors in a series entitled Tauchnitz Collection Of British Authors; over the next 100 years, the series, which also began to include American authors, numbered 5370 volumes; the contemporary binding is bound in half brown morocco with marbled boards and marbled end papers; hinges are tight; spine is square; no foxing or browning to text; both volumes include the page stating the Volume Number in the "Collection Of British Authors" namely VOL. CLXXX and CLXXXI respectively; both title pages state the author as Currer Bell, Author Of "Jane Eyre," ETC.; lettering in gilt on spine; five raise bands; modest shelf wear and rubbing; one small closed tear (one inch) to front free end paper; even before there was copyright protection for British authors, Tauchnitz offered payment in return for authorization to print; his efforts were helpful in leading to an Anglo-German treaty in 1846 establishing an international copyright; both volumes confirm "Copyright Edition" on the title pages.

New edition; small 8vo (18 x 12 cm); dated ownership inscription in pen to front free endpaper recto, binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso; half red pebble-grain morocco by Mudie, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt in 6 compartments, marbled edges, minor wear to extremities, internally clean, very good; vii, [1], 467, [1]pp. A handsome example of Charlotte Brontë's iconic gothic novel, Jane Eyre, in contemporary half morocco by Mudie. After several rejections from various publishers for The Professor, Brontë concentrated her attention on Jane Eyre, finishing her 'fair copy' on March 16th and delivering the manuscript to Smith, Elder & Co. on 19th August 1847. She made it clear to the publisher that she would not revise again: 'I know I should only further injure what may be already defective. Perhaps too the first part of "Jane Eyre" may suit the public taste better than you anticipate - for it is true and Truth has a severe charm of its own. Had I told all [underlined - author's emphasis] the truth, I might indeed have made it far more exquisitely painful.' (Margaret Smith, The Letters of Charlotte Brönte, vol. I, pp539-40). Nevertheless, the novel was received enthusiastically by their reader William Smith Williams and by the head of the firm, George Smith, and it was printed on the 19th October.
