Here he spent his childhood on the farm that his grandfather and great grandfather had wrested some sixty years before from the wilderness in the hills. Father always felt a strong attachment to the homestead on which his ancestors had labored, a sentiment that he hoped to pass on to his descendants. ~ His purpose in writing this book was twofold: to acquaint the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with his father, Oramel, and to picture for them life on a Vermont farm in the mid Nineteenth Century. Father never ceased to marvel that the short space of but two lifetimes ~ his father's and his own, spanning the years 1809 to 1950 ~ saw this young country of ours grow into a giant among nations; saw it fling back the horizons in developing its physical and geographical resources; saw it forge the intricate mercantile and industrial system by which we live today. He felt that he should share with his descendants his remembrance of the simple ~ if more primitively rigorous ~ life of his father, who typified the character bedrock without which such a complex civi lization could not have been founded nor sustained.
