Hardcover. Condición: G+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: G+. Photos Ilustrador. 1st. Literature on Moari lore, traditions, customs and life styles is the richer for the many works of Elsdon Best (1856-1931). He was the first New Zealand born writer to research and record deeply the ethnology and anthropology of the Maori people and muchj of his prolific writing was based on direct friendship with tribal elders, who had confidence in and respect for Best. The author, also Elsdon and a great -nephew of Best , had access to family records in compiling this work, on which he worked for more than 20 years, and it produced much new information on this distinguished ethnologist. The title comes from what is probably Best's most respected work, "Tuhoe -- Children on the Mist," his history of the Maori of the Urewera. This an ex-library copy of a scarce title. 247 pages including two appendices and index, 32 b/w photos. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles G+ with wear to upper/lower edges, stamps, card pocket, library codes label FFEP, three small lines codes title page verso, no other library markings and text block otherweise VG+ with few turned page corners. Colour art DJ is plastic protected and G+ with crossed barcode lower front, code labels at spine base, both flaps taped to pastedowns.

"Elsdon Best is known today as New Zealand's first locally-born scholar of the Maori and of Maori ways. This book describes Best the man - traveller, adventurer, bushman, and devoted ethnologist. [. . .] On return to New Zealand, circumstance and preference brought him into close contact with the Maori, often in areas far removed from Pakeha settlement. Here he won Maori confidence and - realising the urgent need to record their tradition and culture before it was too late - he set himself the task, thereby making a contribution of incalculable value to this country." - from dust-jacket blurb.
