Beautiful Illustrations by Luis Covarrubias (1919 - 1984), an important muralist whose art focused on the cultural heritage of Mexico. [Excerpts from Introduction] Since remote times, the dance has played an essential part in the life of the Mexican people. . . . The eighteen months of the solar year had set festivities in honor of the principal gods, all of which were conducted to stimulate agriculture or fertility. The first month, Atlcoualco, which fell between February 12 and March 3. after the rains ended, was dedicated to the water gods. Later came the months of sowing and cultivating, which evoked the adoration of the gods of earth, water, fire, sun, maize and other crops. On overlapping each other, these festivals gave rise to special commemorative days whose meaning only the priests knew. Various chroniclers witnessed some of these events but could not understand why two or three different dances were executed at the same festival. We know little of the description of these ancient Mexican dances, excepting perhaps that of the Volador or Aerialist. The original patterns barely survive, since many Spanish music and dance elements were adopted following the Conquest. We only know that on the most solemn occasions, large groups participated.

Soft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. "Since remote times, Mexican wearing apparel has been varied, rich and of spectacular appearance. In pre-Hispanic periods, and even today in many cases, it had ritual and caste significance, or distinguished the many ethnic groups that inhabited Meso-America. Our earliest knowledge of Mexican costume comes from the small clay figures produced by artisans of the so-called pre-classic era more than 3000 years ago".(excerpt) Book is in good condition with minor creases and bumps to the page corners. Stapled binding. All pages are bright and clean with no interior markings. Illustrations by the author. Color. No published date.
