Monnet (name on half-title), engraved by Baquoy, Delaunay, Helman, Masquelier, Nee and Ponce; all captioned. 19th-century marbled paper covered boards, green cloth backstrip, edges uncut; (marginal dampstaining, light browning, title and half-title having brittle edges; some stains to endpapers, rubbed, some soiling). Library stamp of Croton Free Library in New York to lower margin of title. First Edition, first issue as it originally appeared without date. Charles Pierre Colardeau, a French poet, published Le Temple de Gnide which versified and recalled the prose of Montesquieu and which appeared the same year as Nicolas-Germain Léonard published his version. The popular poem, Le Temple de Gnide is consists of seven songs in prose which were first published anonymously in 1725 by Montesquieu. The purpose of the poem, the preface says, is to "see that we are pleased by the feelings of the heart and not by the pleasures of the senses." Finely illustrated with full-page copper engraved plates with bright, fresh impressions. A tall copy. Cohen-de Ricci, 245.
