Attractive coloured frontispiece and 23 interesting colour plates. Numerous black and white engravings by Flaxman, H. Railton, J. Pennell, Joshua Reynolds, Durer and Harrison Weir, many full page. There is a serial by Mrs Marshall: 'Chris and Tina' and articles on a great variety of subjects, stories and songs. Spine darkened slightly, covers lightly soiled, front endpaper slightly spotted and slightly creased, occasional foxing and fingermarks, 1 gathering secured by 1 thread only, so that lower fore-edges of 12 pages protrude and are slightly worn and a bit dusty, some inner joints cracked, large closed tear to text page 163/4, no loss of legibility. Still a near very good copy of a well produced uncommon annual. It seems that only 1888 and 1889 were published. The colour plates include 4 of Japanese interest (2 from drawings by Hokusai), 2 of Egyptian interest, 2 of Chinese interest, 2 of Cortez and 2 of Christopher Columbus, 2 of butterflies, A Shoemaker's Shop in Brazil and Hunting the Wild Goat in Bourbon. Very attractive coloured and black and white illustrations throughout chiefly by W.J. Morgan, including 12 full page coloured illustrations for nursery rhymes. Some very pretty coloured and black and white illustrations by Georgie Gaskin (as G. Cave France, 3 full and 3 half page coloured illustrations, 1 half-page black and white) and Mr and Mrs R. Hallward. Authors include Mrs Molesworth and Ascott R. Hope. Spine slightly rubbed, corners a bit worn, boards darkened, 2 facing black and white illustrations by Morgan partly water-coloured, small inscription at top of title page otherwise contents nice. A very good copy. Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. Some of Gaskin's earliest book illustrations, published the same year as Horn Book Jingles. The main artist in the book, Walter J. Morgan was another member of the Birmingham School. The Molesworth items: Ducks, Not 'Geese'; Paul's Blue-Bells; Deer Friends; Opposite Neighbours; Greedy Ben; A Christmas Letter. Honor Appleton's plate The Picture Book shows a little girl by a window enjoying her book, a doll and other books on the floor. 9 illustrations are dated 1920 with no other dates, so it is likely that it was the edition for 1921 issued just before the end of 1920 to catch the Christmas market. [CHILDRENS' ANNUAL] The Prize for Girls and Boys. (London): Wells Gardner, Darton & Co., 1908. [vi], 164 pp. 8vo (9 7/16 x 7 7/16"). Coloured pictorial paper-covered boards. 13 chromolithographic plates (includes frontis.), plus some 26 full-page wood-engraved or duotone plates, and numerous half- (and smaller) page illustrations. All of the chromolithographic plates possess a particularly attractive quality, the colours being at once rich and having a softly applied appearance. Fore-corners bumped and worn, spine extremities worn, small loss of material covering of spine near bottom, boards somewhat rubbed, free endpapers foxed. Internally: very slight marginal foxing otherwise very good; and, as a whole, a good to very good copy. 150.00.
