Condición: Near fine. Handsome complete seven-volume set of Smith & Elder's New Editions of the novels and poems of the Brontë sisters, with Gaskell's Life of Elizabeth Brontë. "I invite you to meditate on a pair of sisters, Emily and Charlotte. Their life experience was an isolated vicarage in a small, dreary English village, a couple of bad years at a girls' school, another year or two in Brussels, which is surely the dullest city in all Europe, and a lot of housework. Out of that seething mass of raw, vital, brutal gutsy Experience they made two of the greatest novels ever written: JANE EYRE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS." This summation - Ursula Le Guin's - is casually slighting to VILLETTE, the greatest Brontë novel of all; to Brussels, which is not even the dullest city in Belgium; and to Anne Brontë, who must be used to it after all these years. Still, it communicates the essentials. This beautifully bound set includes all the major works of the major Brontës (excluding the juvenilia and Charlotte Brontë's unfinished fragment EMMA), as well as Gaskell's biography. Scarce complete and in such condition. 7 volumes, 6.5'' x 4.5'' each. Contemporary red three-quarter calf with red cloth. Gilt-decorated spines with raised spine bands, gilt-lettered brown and green goatskin spine labels. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Light wear to boards, minor foxing to fore-edges and endpapers. Faint blemish to front board of SHIRLEY, small chip to spine label of VILLETTE, else about fine.
