Pp. xv, 268, 4 (ads); engraved frontispiece plate, 5 text-figures (from woodcuts). Publisher's original forest green pebble cloth, gilt lettered on the spine, blind-stamped border lines are present on the front and rear boards, 12mo. The Victorian naturalist Francis Trevelyan Buckland (1826-1880) produced this important early work on raising young salmon and other species. When Buckland wrote this volume he was considering a leading authority on pisciculture. From the book's preface he states: "The substance of this little book was delivered by myself, in the form of a Lecture, at the Royal Institution on the 17th April, 1863, and is a record of the observations which I have made during my experiments in Fish Hatching carried on during the winter months. From time to time I have reported progress in the columns of 'The Field,' and have now, by the permission of the Editor, been enabled to embody my notes in these pages. I have, however, added much information (though I continue to speak in the first person) derived from the experiences of others, kindly communicate to me; and also from closer subsequent investigation on my own part. I trust that those who read the book will find it useful, and that it will enable them to carry out Fish Hatching on their own account." Small name stamp of Arthur L. Hoffman on the endpapers. No other ownership marks. The bottom inner rear board has a small area of pressure damage to the green cloth that is also visible on the rear pastedown, the text and plates are very bright and clean with no foxing or browning, the original cloth binding shows little to no wear; a tight copy in very good condition.
