Original Cloth. Condición: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 458pp. + 8pp. ads. Original patterned green cloth, boards stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. Illustrated. Frontispiece portrait of the author with offsetting of the same to the title page, owing to the lack of a tissue guard (not sure it was issued with one). Brownlow was governor of TN from 1865-1869. Because he opposed secession during the Civil War he was briefly imprisoned and later fled to the north. He is largely blamed for the rise of the KKK in TN because of his policies regarding former Confederates during Reconstruction. Lacking the front free endpaper. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Several small pull tears to the spine ends. Several pages carelessly creased at one corner. Some ink stain to the top edge of the text block, not effecting the text block itself. Light staining to the boards. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall.
