Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. Bassendean, [The Author], 2002 (first edition). Octavo, 607 pages with 'over 200 photographs (the majority from private collections and never published) and maps reproduced from period trench maps'. Papered boards lettered in white on the spine, with the battalion patch printed there and on the front cover; a fine copy with the dustwrapper a little sunned, chipped and scratched on the spine. 'Lieutenant Colonel H.B. Collett wrote "The 28th, A Record of War Service, Volume 1" in 1922. His volume covered the history of the Battalion from April 1915 to March 1916. It was always intended by the 28th Battalion Association that a second volume covering the period 1916 to 1919 would be published. Unfortunately this project was never realized, until now. My volume was originally intended to cover the history of the 28th Battalion on the Western Front from March 1916 until its final disbandment in May 1919. However, for the benefit of those people who do not have a copy of Lieutenant Colonel Collett's volume, I deemed it necessary to write this volume of the 28th Battalion's activities from formation in April 1915 until after Armistice in November 1918' (Author's Note, page 5). The 'Compiler's Note' in Collett's 1922 volume cuts straight to the chase: 'For the second volume a good deal of material is already in hand, but success cannot be ensured unless ex-members will co-operate with the 28th Battalion Association Committee and the Compiler'.

AUSTRALIAN MILITARYThe 28th Battalion was raised at Blackboy Camp in Western Australia on 16 April 1915 from recruits previously earmarked for the 24th Battalion, which was instead being raised in Victoria. The battalion left Australia in June, and, after two months spent training in Egypt, landed at Gallipoli on 10 September. At Gallipoli, the 7th Brigade, which included the 28th Battalion, reinforced the weary New Zealand and Australian Division. The 28th had a relatively quiet time at Gallipoli and the battalion departed the peninsula in December, having suffered only light casualties. After another stint in Egypt, the 7th Brigade proceeded to France and the Western Front, as part of the 2nd Australian Division. The 28th Battalion took part in its first major battle at Pozià res between 28 July and 6 August 1916. After a spell in a quieter sector of the front in Belgium, the 2nd Division returned to the south in October, where the 28th Battalion took part in confused and costly fighting to the east of Flers, in the Somme Valley. For many of the major battles of 1917 the 28th found itself in supporting roles. At the second battle of Bullecourt, the 28th provided reinforcements who were nonetheless involved in heavy fighting. The 28th went on to attack as part of the third phase at the battle of Menin Road, capturing its objectives in seven minutes, and was in reserve during the capture of Broodseinde Ridge. The battalion was also in reserve for the battle of Poelcappelle on 9 October, but, with the attack floundering in the mud, it soon became embroiled in the fighting. In April 1918, the 28th fought to turn back the German spring offensive and, from 8 August participated in the joint British and French offensive that marked the beginning of Germanyâ s defeat. The Battalion was prominent in the fighting to secure crossing points over the Somme River around Peronne, and in the advance beyond Mont St Quentin. The 28thâ s last actions of the war were fought as part of the effort to break through the Beaurevoir Line in the first week of October 1918. The first members of the battalion began returning to Australia in January, and the 28th was disbanded in March 1919.Australia. Army. Australian Imperial Force (1914-1921). Hardcover. Original cloth. Condición: FINE!. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY HISTORYThe 51st Battalion was raised in Egypt in the first week of March 1916, as part of the â doublingâ of the AIF. Approximately half of its recruits were Gallipoli veterans from the 11th Battalion, and the other half, fresh reinforcements from Australia. Reflecting the composition of the 11th, the 51st was predominantly composed of men from Western Australia. The battalion became part of the 13th Brigade of the newly-formed 4th Australian Division.Arriving in France on 12 June 1916, the 51st moved into the trenches of the Western Front within a fortnight. It fought in its first major battle at Mouquet Farm in August and September, and suffered casualties equivalent to a third of its strength in both of the attacks (14 August and 3 September) it launched. After Mouquet Farm, the battalion saw out the rest of the year, alternating between front-line duty, and training and labouring behind the line. This routine continued through the bleak winter of 1916â "17.Early in 1917, the battalion participated in the advance that followed the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. On 2 April it attacked at Noreuil, a village which had been fortified to delay the Australian advance. Later in the year, the focus of the AIFâ s operations moved to the Ypres sector in Belgium. There the battalion fought in the battle of Messines between 7 and 12 June and the battle of Polygon Wood between 26 and 27 September. Another winter of trench routine followed. With the collapse of Russia in October 1917, a major German offensive on the Western Front was expected in early 1918. This occurred in France in late March and the 4th Division moved to defend positions around Dernancourt on the River Ancre. The 51st Battalion assisted in the repulse of a large German attack on 5 April, launching a critical counter-attack late in the day. The German threat remained until late April, and in the early hours of ANZAC Day 1918 the 51st participated in the now legendary attack to dislodge the enemy from Villers-Bretonneux.When the Allies launched their own offensive in early August, the 51st Battalion was among the units involved and played an active role until the middle of that month, before moving to duties in the rear area. The battalion was ordered forward again in early September, in preparation for its last major operation of the war. On 18 September it provided part of the 4th Divisionâ s reserve for the attack on the Hindenburg â outpost lineâ . Not long after the Armistice on 11 November 1918, drafts of men began returning to Australia for discharge. With the departure of the last of these on 5 May 1919, the 51st Battalion disbanded.Includes Casualty list, roll of honour, detailed nominal roll of officers, honours and awards, nominal roll of POWsFirst Edition.
