Vol. I of 5 only. 262 p., hand colored frontispiece, many black and white photographs, most with tissue paper inserts. Text is clean and unmarked. Navy blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine which is tight and sound. Slight wear to edges and corners of the covers. "Written by eminent Japanese authorities and scholars" appears on the title page.

Set of five volumes, frontispiece to each volume (hand-coloured albumen print with captioned tissue guard), black and white photographic illustrations with tissue guards throughout, pages: xii + 262; viii + 248; viii + 257; viii + 252; viii + 281; 23 x 15.5cm, blue cloth-covered boards with decorative gilt-lettered spine, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Light wear to head and tail of spines, one leaf carelessly opened with a little subsequent loss of margin, small dent on the rear edge of volume I, else very good condition with spine gilt particularly fresh. A decorative display set. Following the success of the deluxe folio editions of this title, this more modest but still elegant trade edition was published by the original publishers in 1904. The volumes offer an overview of the history (both ancient and modern), art and culture of Japan.

FOLIO, unpaginated, Photos & Illus, Hardcover Hardcovers: Orient Edition, limited to 500 numbered copies of which this is #334, sections (volumes) 1 through 10. Previous owners bookplate on first paste-down in every volume. Each volume has a different floral pattern on its cloth boards. Unfortunately the floral cloth boards are a mess, with fraying throughout on every edge and suface. Soil. Title plate is tipped onto each front board. Tipped in plate has a gold crane design and title in gold. Volume 4 has a burn mark on it's front board. Texts are clean and are bound in Japanese style, (uncut) with boards tied together. First free endpapers of a few volumes are folded and some have separated, but they are present. Collotype prints of Japanese flowers by K. Ogawa. The photographs are all made and colored by hand in Japan by over 350 native artists. Text pages are printed on cream coated paper stock. Art plates and vintage hand-colored photo inserts are all protected with an extra matching overleaf. A fascinating history. Nice tight binding.
