Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. This is a very good condition hard cover: the spine is square, binding tight, all corners sharp, and is internally clean and NOT marked. The dust jacket, now enclosed in a removable mylar sleeve, rated good, with minor chipping at head of spine and extremities noted. QUOTED from the dust jacket flap: "The Asian game of wei-ch'i - known to the Japanese as go - has been a favorite with Chinese generals, statesmen, and literati for more than 2,000 years. Mao Tse-tung, in his writings on war ad revolution, has himself used this game to illustrate his strategy., Unlike chess, which is oriented toward the concentration of forces at a point upon the board, in wei-ch'i a player attempts to extend his control of territory; avoiding direct confrontations, he encircles his opponent. The similarity to guerrilla warfare is obvious. In this unusual book, Mr. Boorman examines the game wei-ch'i to discover what Westerners can learn about the strategy of Chinese Communist armies and of other Asian revolutionary forces. In his introduction Mr. Boorman writes, 'if indeed wei-ch'i and Chinese Communist strategy are products of the same strategic tradition, wei-ch'i may be more realistically used as an analogic model of that strategy than any purely theoretical structure generated by a Western social scientist. The structure of the game, and in particular its abstractness, makes possible a depth of analogy which has no parallel in the relatively superficial comparisons of Western forms of military strategy to chess or poker.' He continues, "It is also fruitful to apply the wei-ch'i analogue to post-1950 insurgent actions in Southeast Asia.' Mr. Boorman provides a detailed description, with diagrams, of the game. He then suggests parallels between wei-ch'i and Mao Tse-tung's strategy against Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist armies during the Chinese Civil War, giving weight to political as well as military factors. In particular, he shows how Mao's strategy triumphed over Chiang's Western-style concentration of forces in Manchuria - one of the most decisive military campaigns of recent history. In the final section of the book, he comments upon the usefulness of his hypothesis in helping Western scholars, soldiers, and diplomats to comprehend the patterns of Asian wars and revolutions and the dynamics of Chinese Communist strategy on the 'world board.' It is his hope that a sound knowledge of this fascinating game may also help bridge the gap between the culture and psyche of the Westerner and of Asian revolutionary leaders." 242 pages.
