Harvey Black was a significant figure in the Civil War and in postwar Virginia medicine and education. During the first twenty months of the Civil War, he served as regimental surgeon of the Fourth Virginia Infantry, part of the celebrated Stonewall Brigade. After the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, he was appointed surgeon in charge of the Second Corps Field Hospital, the first field hospital at the corps level on either side during the war. After 1865, Black played a key role in founding the college now known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. During the last two decades of his life he served as the administrator of public mental institutions in Williamsburg and Marion, Virginia, where his leadership was a progressive force in the treatment of mental illness.
