These are the author's reworked correspondences to his hometown paper, written during a jaunt of the Ohio Editorial Association in June, 1879. He and his compatriots went to Denver, Pike's Peak and back. Much on Colorado, the plains, rail travel, etc. A wonderful association copy, from father to son.

Editor of the Dayton Journal, Bickham was a staunch Republican. Nonetheless he inscribed this copy of his book to Samuel S. Cox, a staunch Democrat who served many terms in Congress, first from Ohio, then from New York. Cox later was the U. S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. The book is clean, bright, and tight, with just a hint of toning to the pages. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. SIGNED. Book.

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED by the author to Pitt Cooke, brother of financier Jay Cooke who assisted in financing the Union in the Civil War. He was a pioneer Ohio attorney and helped finance the Northern Pacific Railway.

CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: When the Civil War broke out, the author spent two years as a war correspondent on the front, sending his dispatches back to the Cincinnati Commercial. He was first assigned to General William Rosecrans army, where he was a volunteer aide-de-camp with the rank of captain. He also spent several months with General George McClellan s army, before being transferred back to Rosecrans. He was present at the Battle of Stones River, and Rosecrans praise for his actions there earned him the rank of major. RYAN #52: "Written in the midst of the war by one who was present in the field and camp with General Rosecrans. The Fourteenth Army Corps was originally the Army of the Ohio . Many Ohio regiments were in this organization.The author was a war correspondent during part of the war. His letters and dispatches soon gave him a valuable and reliable reputation. He was given the rank of captain and afterwards major on General Rosecrans' staff. He was born at Cincinnati, March 30, 1827, and spent his life in newspaper work. In 1863 Major Bickham bought the Dayton Journal and for a lifetime ranked as one of the prominent and aggressive Republican editors of Ohio." HOWES 442.
