Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. Item Description Rembrandt The Master & His Workshop: Volume One Paintings Christopher Brown, Jan Kelch, Pieter van Thiel; Volume Two Drawings & Etchings Holm Bevers, Peter Schatborn, Barbara Welzel; Yale University Press, New Haven and London in association with National Gallery Publications, London, 1991. The Rembrandt Research Project, comprising the foremost Rembrandt scholars, based in Amsterdam, has undertaken the formidable task of establishing a body of works which can be securely attributed to Rembrandt. This has resulted in the deattribution of many works, once unquestionably accepted as Rembrandts. New research on artists known to have studied in Rembrandt s Workshop and the attribution of paintings and drawings to these students has provided more information. These books also serve as catalogues of the exhibition organized by curators from Berlin, Amsterdam and London galleries which have three of the finest collections of Rembrandt. In addition, works were lent to the exhibition from owners all around the globe, and they are listed in the books. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 - 1669), usually simply known as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker and draughtsman. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history. Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt's works depict a wide range of style and subject matter, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, and biblical and mythological themes as well as animal studies. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art (especially Dutch painting), although in many ways antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative and gave rise to important new genres. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was also an avid art collector and dealer. These two books, 396 and 288 pages measuring 289 X 245mm, are in fine condition as are the dust jackets that are now in protective, mylar wraps. A beautiful set of books. The two large books are very heavy and additional postage will be required.
