Large octavo, cream illus. cloth (hardcover), uncut, full-color illus. frontis. pastedown, 184 pp. Illustrated with full-color plates. Very Good, with darkened spine. List of Stories: The Madonna of the Goldfinch; The Whispering Shell; Godmother's Gifts: The Story of Marguerite's Locket; Tonino's Crucific; S. Martin's Purse; Heartease; Sandro's Search; The Coming of the King; Alessandro; The Golden Key; Signor Piccione; The Magic Mirror; The Steep Ascent. From Author's foreword: When summer is ended and the trees have shed their leaves, and bitter winds sweep over the bare, dreary garden, one looks back wistfully to the sunny days gone by, when skies were blue and flowers made the earth gay with their beauty. So in this grey time of war, when the world seems changed and grown sad, I find myself looking back wistfully to the peaceful, happy days it was once my lot to spend in Italy. These stories are about the children and places I knew and loved in that beautiful land, and I have written them down in the hope that they may hold in them some faint fragrance of those dear days of happy memory, even as a handful of dried rose leaves or sweet lavender brings with it a breath of summer, and so it is made welcome when the flowers are dead.
