Hardcover. Condición: VERY GOOD. Hans Holbein Ilustrador. LIMITED NUMBERED EDITIONSmall Quartos, measuring 10 1/4" x 6 1/2" (26.035 cm x 16.51 cm). First volume Number 241 out of 750 copies. Many pages uncut. Front board pattern darkened and rubbing and wear to corners. Second volume lacks limitation number, and is brighter of board, and while shows a bit of worming to a 4-inch section of rear hinge, is nonetheless tightly bound. Decorated with Holbein's woodcuts of the "Dance of Death". Quarter black cloth with printed paper covered boards with a floral design in yellow, green, red, and black. Edges uncut. Pages numbered 269-590 plus unpaginated front matter. Title in black lettering on label on spine. Light foxing to endpapers with acid transfer to pastedowns. Thomas Lovell Beddoes (1803 - 1849) was something of an enigma. During his lifetime he only published two works -- The Improvisatore in 1821, and The Bride's Tragedy in 1822, leaving his entire remaining manuscripts to his devoted friend Thomas Forbes Kelsall, who unflaggingly attempted, with some success, to have his friends' works published. Robert Browning as well, as a considerable fan and promoter of Beddoes. Sir Edmund Gosse writes (see Introduction) ."He existed for forty-six years unconcealed, but unobserved. His name does not occur in the memoirs of the age he lived in, and if it had not been for the devoted attachmentof Thomas Forbes Kelsall -- himself not otherwise known to posterity -- the history of the poet of 'Death's Jest-Book' would be completely obscure.".
