Condición: molto buono. in-8, pp. 20, legatura coeva in cartone rustico. Rossetti-Cantoni, p. 15. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. BECCARIA, GIAMBATTISTA. Dell'elettricismo artificale e naturale libri due. Torino: F. A. Campana, 1753. # FIRST EDITION. 4 to. Contemp. vellum over boards, gilt title on spine. (8), 245, (1, errata) pp. Minor wear to front edge of vellum, uniformly lightly browned as usual; a very good copy. The important first book of this famous author of electrical works, Giambattista Beccaria (1716-81), has an interesting history as presented by J.L. Heilbron ('Electricity in the 17th and 18th centuries', 1979, pp. 365-372): "Beccaria realized that his best chance for glory lay in producing the first European Franklinist treatise, and that priority was essential. He began to write at tremendous speed. His enemies discovered his plan and resolved to suffocate his book. They brought copies of Nollet's 'Letters' from Paris to prove the frivolity of Beccaria's project. They purloined the sheets of his book as they were printed, and published a refutation of one half of it before Beccaria had corrected the proofs of the other. They failed to discourage him. He drew up an answer to Nollet, which he inserted in the middle of his book, (this is in double-column smaller type on pages 144 to 158), and a blast against his adversaries, which he placed at the end (also double-column smaller type, pages 235 to 245). The work, 'Dell' elettricismo artificale e naturale libri due', appeared at Turin in the late summer of 1753, to 'the applause of the learned and the despair of the spiteful'. The hasty work is a minor masterpiece." Wheeler Gift Cat. 375 (facsimile of title on p. 194). Ronalds, p. 40. Gartrell 32. Bakken, p. 40. Ekelöf Cat. 353.

It was this edition that Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Priestley brought to John Nourse, noted London publisher of scientific books, to have translated into English and published in 1776 as "A treatise upon artificial electricity.Beccaria (1716-1781) was a principal exponent of Franklin's studies on electricity in Europe, and a principal innovator in Italian experimental science. Franklin and Beccaria wrote to each other frequently (Beccaria sometimes writing in Latin, which had to be translated for Franklin), and remained keen on each other's work, although they never met face to face. Priestly (in his "History and Present State of Electricity") declared Beccaria " the "great Italian genius" who had "far surpassed everything done by French and English electricians."This 1772 edition, sent to press at the Royal Printers of Turin, includes a dedicatory letter to Franklin, not present in the earlier version.
