Orig. cloth, rebacked with new paper label, uncut. iv, cxix, 688 pp. Engraved presentation leaf, engraved portrait + 16 engraved plates + 8 folding tables. PRESENTATION COPY to Laommi Baldwin, Jr. (1780-1838), ".the father of civil engineering in this country." (Struik, pp.125-26). Some dampstaining to the plates; a very good copy. Beaufoy's (1764-1827) important hydraulic experiments resulted in several improvements in shipbuilding, and also provided the first verification in England of Euler's theorems of the resistance of fluids. Printed for presentation only, this copy has a particularly interesting American association. "Beaufoy was the first Englishman to climb Mont Blanc.
