Half Leather boards with' mottled effect' card. Spine highly decorated in gold leaf with two leather labels, one black and one red with title and author thereon. To the front end paper is the author's signature together with the following inscription.- November 18th 1938 My Elizabeth's birthday - Awake, awake Deborah, awake, awake with a song. 430 Pages. This is a tale of myths and legends based on a house in Cheshire, 'The Image House' Bunbury, built in the early 1800's and part of The Peckforton Estate located on the Whitchurch road near Bunbury Heath. Seth Shone built the house on common land, as 'Squatters Rights' which ment that if the house was complete with smoke coming out of the chimney by the following morning the property was his. Some years later he was wrongly convicted of poaching and sentenced to be deported to Australia for eight years. At the end of this period he returned to his home in Cheshire and began carving stone faces of the people who wrongly accused and sentenced him - The Bailiff, Judge, Gamekeeper and the Jury. These were placed on the outside of the house. A bright clean copy in Near Fine condition. Included with the book are two letters and a postcard to the author at her home in Hoylake, Cheshire from Freda Bone of Helensborough, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, artist.
