Condición: Good. Good. - A 1-1/2 inch high by 4-3/4 inch wide piece of paper clipped from the bottom of a letter, with the words "Sincerely yours" typed in closing signed by Rex Beach in black ink. The once folded paper has been mounted onto heavier black stock, likely clipped from an album. Good. The American novelist, playwright and Olympic water polo player Rex Beach (1877-1949) studied law before moving to Alaska at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. He turned to writing after he was unsuccessful as a prospector basing his stories on his experiences as a prospector. His novel "The Spoilers" was based on his experience with corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors. Beach's works were inspired by Jack London and, though popular in their day, were also criticized as being simply tales of "strong hairy men doing strong hairy deeds".

Hardcover first edition - First edition. Although best known for his books set in the far North, this novel of adventure, romance and humor is set on the Texas-Mexican border. Basis for the 1918 Frank Powell silent cowboy western ("Rex Beach's Epic Drama of the Great American West") starring Anna Q. Nilsson, Herbert Heyes, Robert Taber, and E.L. Fernandez. Illustrated with a full-color frontispiece and eight glossy black and white plates by M. Stockton Mulford (the dust jacket repeats the art on the frontispiece.) "Published September, 1915", H-P code at copyright page (indicating an actual printing in August 1915). 356 pp. Very good in a fair only dust jacket - the front cover of the book, with a cowboy in silhouette against a gold heart is bright and beautiful, but the spine of the book is faded where the dust jacket is missing approximately 3 inches at the bottom of the spine (other edgewear to the dj) Despite the flaws in the dj, this is very uncommon in the first edition in dust jacket.

This American novelist and playwright (member of the American water polo team at the 1904 Olympics) often used his experiences in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush as the basis for his adventure tales such as "The Spoilers" (1906); a household name in the early 20th century because of bestsellers such as "The Net" (1912), "Don Careless" (1928), "Jungle Gold" (1935) and many others, he committed suicide at age 71. TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Sebring, FL, n.y. April. Addressed to O.J. Kadlec. Good only. While complete content-wise, there is a homely 3" X 3 3/4" paper loss at upper right corner, removing the letter's typed year, and a couple of small edge chips further down on the right margin, which is worn; verso shows old but neat and discreet and archival mends. Beach tells an admirer "I'll be delighted to autograph any copy or copies of my books which you may care to send me." Bold, sharp signature in brown ink.

Big, bold signature on brown ink on the verso of his heavy stock 3" X 1½" calling card, n.p., n.y. Fine. Small mounting traces on verso. Accompanied by a press kit for the film version of a Beach novel, the 1947 color Western "The Michigan Kid," starring John Hall, Victor McLaglen, Andy Devine and Rita Johnson. Consists of a cover letter on "Universal Pictures Company" letterhead transmitting this material, signed in facsimile by Joe Lawler. There are 14 mimeographed 8½" X 11" sheets, typed and double spaced and printed rectos only: "Exploitation Suggestions" (4pp), "Production Notes" (2pp), intro to the film (2pp), and thumbnail biographies of McLaglen (2pp) and one page each for director Ray Taylor, Andy Devine, Rita Johnson and Jon Hall. Very good. Lightly age toned. Also present are six fine 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white still scenes from the film, each with blue paper caption attached. A superb and scarce grouping.
