Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In 878, Alfred, king of Wessex was on the verge of oblivion. Trapped on a small island in the Somerset Levels, it seemed as if he and his kingdom were about to be destroyed. Yet within months he had defeated the Viking invaders and started to reverse the tide of conquest. While Alfred was driven by the prospect of a land called England that did not yet exist, he was not the one who finally created it. Two of his children, Edward king of Wessex after him and his remarkable daughter AEthelflaed, the Lady of the Mercians, expanded his kingdom into Mercia in the Midlands. His grandson AEthelstan confirmed the conquest of the north at one of the great battles of the so-called Dark Ages at Brunanburh. The triumph of Alfreds dynasty was cemented by the short but magnificent reign of Edgar the Peaceable, a man who could claim to be not just king of England but emperor of the whole of Britain. The ultimate collapse of Anglo-Saxon England, first of all in the face of Cnut of Denmarks campaigns in 1015/16 and later in the Norman Conquest of 1066, has unjustly obscured their achievements. This book tells the story of the Anglo-Saxons and reasserts their right to be regarded as one of the greatest royal dynasties that Britain has ever seen. A tale of scheming, power struggles, conflict and the birth of England as we know it today. W. B. Bartlett, author of Vikings, tells the story of Alfred the Great and his descendants, and reasserts their right to be regarded as one of history's great Royal dynasties. Since the colourful tales of Marco Polo, the myths surrounding them have been wildly exaggerated and the truth has become ever more obscure. This new book separates fact from fiction and shows that the Assassins of history are just as interesting as the Assassins of legend. The group first appeared in the late eleventh century as an offshoot of the Ismaili sect of Islam. They called themselves Nizaris but to some other Muslims they were 'hashishiyyun', a derogatory term meaning 'hashish taker'. Usually based in mountain fortresses, over the next two centuries they spread from Persia into Syria, central Asia and India, using assassination as only one of a number of methods of achieving their aims. Widely loathed and feared, they were especially threatening because they had no fear of death. If they were to die in the execution of their mission they were hailed as martyrs and promised eternal life in a secret garden of paradise. Indeed, most of the assassinations they carried out were suicide missions, usually committed in public in broad daylight and with little opportunity for the Assassin to escape. Often, he would befriend his intended victim months beforehand and then, once trust had been established, he would suddenly strike ~ servant or friend turned killer. W. B. Bartlett's pacy narrative follows the history of the group with special reference to the Alamut period (1093~1256). Fascinatingly, he shows how their history and mythology have been developed over time through the writings of Western chroniclers.

Hardcover. Condición: New. The city of Acre fell to Crusader forces in 1191, becoming their capital until its recapture a century later, which effectively ended the campaign to establish a Christian Holy Land. In his study of this period Bartlett argues that the Crusaders? loss of Acre was the culmination of a long period of escalation involving many power blocs in the Levant, including Mongols and Mamluks as well as Christians and Muslims.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Whilst Richard I is one of medieval England's most famous kings he is also the most controversial. He has variously been considered a great warrior but a poor king, a man driven by the quest for fame and glory but also lacking in self-discipline and prone to throwing away the short-term advantages that his military successes brought him. In this reassessment W. B. Bartlett looks at his deeds and achievements in a new light. The result is a compelling new portrait of `the Lionheart' which shows that the king is every bit as remarkable as his medieval contemporaries found him to be. This includes his Muslim enemies, who spoke of him as their most dangerous and gallant opponent. It shows him to be a man badly let down by some of those around him, especially his brother John and the duplicitous French king Philip. The foibles of his character are also exposed to the full, including his complicated relationships with the key women in his life, especially the imposing contemporary figure of his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and his wife, Berengaria, with whom he failed to produce an heir, leading to later suggestions of homosexuality. This is a new Richard, one for the twenty-first century, and a re-evaluation of the life story of one of the greatest personalities of medieval Europe New paperback edition - The amazing life of Richard I, King of England, known to history as 'Richard the Lionheart', after his reputation for bravery exhibited fighting the 'Saracens' whilst crusading in the Holy Land.
