Descripción: Printed at Providence: by Carter and Wilkinson and sold at their book-store opposite the Market, 1797. 8vo, pp. 141; a very good copy in contemporary American sheep, spine with remains of morocco label, rubbed. Contemporary ownership inscription on half title of Thomas Sessions, 20 April 1797. First edition, and a good copy. Josias Arnold died in 1796 at the age of only 28: he was the son of Jonathan Arnold (1741-93), the revolutionary patriot who drafted the law in 1776 which repealed the Rhode Island oath of allegiance to Britain, and who was one of the leading founders of St Johnsbury, VT. The prefatory account of the author is by James Burrill, another Rhode Island notable who had just become the state's attorney general and who later rose to become one of its senators. The copyright was secured to Mrs Susan Arnold, doubtless the author's widow. This copy belonged to one Thomas Sessions, who presumably bought it on publication. It seems very like that this is the Thomas Sessions (1769-1845) who was a prominent Providence merchant and farmer - there is a Sessions St in the city to this day. His family papers are now owned by the Rhode Island Historical Society. Sessions was just a year younger than Arnold, and may well have known him personally. Evans 31753; Alden 1523; Wegelin 7. Nº de ref. del artículo: 11918

Descripción: Carter and Wilkinson, Providence, 1797. xii,[13]-141,[1]pp. 12mo. Modern full morocco. Ink name on title, shallow chips at fore-edge of half-title and top edge of title, last two leaves cracking at top of gutter, with repair to terminal leaf, a few other small marginal mends; just a sound copy. First edition. With an introduction by James Burrill, Jr., who edited this posthumous collection from Arnold's papers and periodical publications. Arnold, who earned degrees at both Dartmouth and Yale, settled in Vermont in the winter of 1791/2 after the death of his father, where he practiced law and served two terms in the legislature. He died in 1796, still in his early 30s, and this volume is credited with being the first volume of verse by a Vermont poet. The editor was, however, somewhat careless, as in addition to Arnold's imitations of Horace and Ossian, assorted epitaphs and elegies, and "The Warrior's Death Song," he included Freneau's "The Last Words of Shalum; - or, The Dying Indian" on pp. 46-9. ESTC locates a number of copies, though only one (BL) outside North America. STODDARD & WHITESELL 564. WEGELIN 7. EVANS 31753. SABIN 2074. GILMAN, p.15. ESTC W2477. Nº de ref. del artículo: WRCLIT69301
