First Edition. x, 1 leaf, 208 pp; 500 illus. Original buckram, 4to. "The most exhaustive study on wall painting is still Edgar W. Anthony, Romanesque Frescoes (1951, reprinted 1971)" (please ask for on-line source). This is a peculiar copy of an important and uncommon monograph. It was bound upside down, and the former owners, Louise and Kent Hieatt (I believe this is A. Kent Hieatt, who along with his wife, Constance, was a scholar and translator of Middle English literature), affixed a handful of postcards, cutouts, etc., of examples of Romanesque frescoes they perhaps encountered in their travels to the half-title, p. 208, and the front blank leaves. On the title page there are glue remains of four corners that must have been used to mount another photo, with two notes in French written beneath. A suitable working copy of the original edition; I haven't seen the Greenwood Press reprint -- also not so common -- and while their reprints are better than average (many other reprinters' titles are far below), I can't imagine it surpasses the Princeton edition.
