Anderson contribuyó a la definición y el enriquecimiento del archivo fotográfico de la Hispanic Society. No solo realizó imágenes únicas de España, sino que más tarde utilizó su experiencia en publicaciones innovadoras. Cuando su carrera cambió de rumbo después de 1930, se dedicó a investigar el traje regional. Las fotografías de estos meses en Asturias nos ofrecen una mirada cautivadora de la vida diaria en la región. Anderson nunca hubiese conseguido tales resultados si no hubiese tenido una concienzuda formación. La presencia de su padre durante la expedición de 1924-1925 resultó imprescindible, pues él era fotógrafo profesional y había sido su primer maestro en el oficio. Gracias a su ayuda Anderson pudo mantener todo el equipo fotográfico en perfectas condiciones.Ruth Anderson había aprendido el oficio en el negocio fotográfico que poseía su familia en la ciudad de Kearney (Nebraska) y completó su formación en Nueva York, en la escuela del prestigioso fotógrafo Clarence White. Después de terminar en 1919 sus estudios trabajó en la decoración de interiores en unos grandes almacenes de Nueva York. Dos años más tarde el propio Clarence White la recomendó para el puesto en la Hispanic Society, cuando comprobó decepcionado cómo su alumna desperdiciaba su talento. Si el estudio de su padre y la escuela de Clarence White fueron los dos lugares donde Anderson se educó como fotógrafa, la Hispanic Society resultó decisiva a la hora de poner en práctica ese saber. La manera de trabajar allí era muy distinta a todo lo que había hecho hasta el momento. Durante su viaje a España en 1923 tuvo la oportunidad de registrar por primera vez los temas que el museo recopilaba. Junto a las clásicas vistas de edificios importantes y obras de arte, fotografió también a las personas que iba encontrando en su camino. En Madrid documentó a una multitud de gente dirigiéndose en romería hacia la pradera de San Isidro para celebrar al santo patrón y en Valencia, entre sus primeras imágenes sobre artesanías, realizó una serie en el interior de un taller de cerámica de Manises donde aparece un grupo de mujeres trabajando. Un año después, durante el transcurso de su primera gran expedición fotográfica, recibirá periódicamente desde la Hispanic Society listados con los temas sobre los que desean documentarse. Además, en las cartas que recibía le indicaban que debía añadir explicaciones sobre el lugar, el objeto y la escena de cada una de las imágenes. También era necesario que llevase un diario anotando hechos históricos e información complementaria sobre cada lugar y lo que iba aprendiendo.
