The Twenty-first Missouri Volunteer Infantry was formed on December 31st, 1861, when the understrength First and Second North-east Missouri Volunteers merged. Following the muster in at Canton, the new outfit left for the lower Mississippi valley. It was the first Union regiment engaged at Shiloh and, after a severe mauling, went on to participate in both battles of Corinth later that year. Other campaigns followed, including skirmishes and scouting in Western Kentucky and Tennessee, Sherman's Meridian expedition, the battle of Tupelo, the Price raid into Missouri, battle of Nashville and seige and assault on Mobile's Fort Blakely in April 1865. After the close of hositilities the regiment was a mainstay of federal authority on Alabama's Gulf coast. Includes Bibliographical Essay and Index.
