Hardcover. Condición: Fair. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo, pp xviii, 509; viii, 511 pp., 18 engraved plates (one folding), numerous wood engravings in text, 3 maps (2 folding), as listed. Original purple cloth, spines faded, slightly rubbed to head and foot, occasional light touch of foxing, but a very clean example over all. Vol 1 lacks front flyleaf. Volume 2 completely loose in case, and therefore needs recasing. Bookplate of the author Walter Harold Wilkin. WITH A MANSUCRIPT DIARY NOTE dated 18th August 1841 loosely inserted, clearly by a person who has been on the expedition, as the notes describe an incident which took place on pages 171-172 of volume one, when they were visited by the King of Brass Town s son, whilst they were moored at the mouth of the Nun. The notes are written on both sides of a single sheet of foolscrap, and are about fifty lines in total. No author is given, but presumably the sheet comes from the notes made by Allen or by Thomson from which they eventually wrote up their written account. Please note faults, but priced accordingly.

First edition. 2 vols. Portrait, 2 folding maps & 15 engraved (1 folding)plates and including 1 further map., with illustrations in the text. 8vo. A very good copy in original but remainder (?) blue cloth, gilt very slight wear to headcaps. a prize binding as attested by an inscrription on the front free endpaper ( Ealing School fourth Mathematics 1858) , a.e.g xviii, 509; viii, 511pp. London, Bentley, Sent to the Niger with orders to penetrate as far as possible and make treaties with the local rulers to outlaw the Slave Trade, the expedition met with considerable hardship from first entering the river. For the most part they remained healthy for the first month until reaching Iddah after which many of here crew were struck down with fever until matters were so grave that even the determined Capt. Trotter was forced to order Capt Allen retreat to the coast while he pushed on in the hopes of reaching a healthier climate upstream. But fever continued too ravage the crew and by the 8th August any further progress was clearly impossible. The expedition was considered a disastrous failure though Commander Allen cites the three treaties signed with the most influential potentates on the river to have constituted partial success.

First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo, xviii, 509; viii, 511 pp., 18 engraved plates (one folding), numerous illustrations in text, 3 maps (2 folding), contemporary polished calf gilt, one joint repaired, an attractive set. The British Niger Expedition of 1841 was commissioned by the British Government to perform two primary tasks: firstly, to work towards the suppression of the slave trade by negotiating anti-slavery treaties with local chiefs, and to explore the course of the River Niger. However, so-called 'river fever' brought an untimely end to the expedition and it was abandoned. Nonetheless this title contains a useful history of Niger exploration, excellent observations on the tribes and natural history of the region. Brunet 20865; Gay 2739.
