Black e/ps. b/w photo frontis 'Vice-Admiral E.G.Fanshawe CB. From a photo by Norman, Montreal 1871 frontis. With protective tissue in situ as bound. b/w illusts, many with protective tissue. In the Preface by his daughter (Alice Fanshawe) she states:- 'This record is made up of letters from and about my father, of his journals and of notes from his own recollections. It is intended for members of his family and for intimate friends. .His sketches are reproduced in many of the illustrations, all of which are photographs by my brother Evelyn.AEJF Cromwell Road April 1904. Edward Fanshawe 1814-1906. Took part in the Crimean War. Commanded HMS Hastings, Centurion, Trafalgar. Was Superintendent Chatham Dockyard 1861. Third Naval Lord 1865. Supt. Malta Dockyard 1868. Commander in Chief N. USA Station 1870. Admiral President RN College Greenwich 1875. Commander in Chief Portsmouth 1878. Retired 1879. Condition: Cover spine darkened with age. Wear on top and bottom spine, rubbed on spine seams. Wear cover corners. Slight age/handling marks front and back. 2nd and 3rd blank o/ps tanning + slight gap centre seam. Right hand page at top is written a personal dedication to E.C. Fanshawe (Believed to be their brother, Lt. Col. Edward Cardwell Fanshawe who died in 1917) from Alice and Evelyn Fanshawe dated May 1904. This was Edward Cardwell's personal copy. ELF is repeated at the bottom of the page, near central seam. Title page, some age spots in lower third seam. P128 cracked down seam, but binding remains firm. Last two end papers, end of Appendix and blank page tanned. Outer edges of pages collectively discoloured with age. Overall clean, little wear, binding firm, good colour. A rare book. Good + condition. I have a number of books which belonged to the Fanshawe family - including an Ancestral Tablets. Signed by Author.
