Two works bound together, written and illustrated by A. H. Forrester. A very good half leather binding. 8vo. 16.6cm x 1.0cm x 3.4cm. pp.vii/pp.9-245/[1p.]/pp.224. Maroon calf spines and corners over marbled boards. Edges lightly rubbed and bumped. Spine with 5 raised bands and dark green title label (chipped with some loss). Marbled page edges. Clean text and illustrations throughout. First title-page: 'A Bundle Of Crowquills, Dropped By Alfred Crowquill.' (dated 1856) ; Second title-page: 'The Electric Telegraph Of Fun.' (dated 1854). VG. ** Alfred Henry Forrester (10 September 1804 26 May 1872) was an English author, comics artist, illustrator and artist, who was also known under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill.

Later edition. xviii, 173 pp. Illus. with 86 b/w plates. 8vo. Fourteen of the sketches are on angling subjects and were originally issued between 1834 and 1836, transferred to steel by Henry Wallis and published with letterpress in 1838, and first printed with a memoir of Seymour in 1866. Westwood p.192. A very good copy with minor wear at extremities, small soiled spot on rear board, a few leaves with offsetting or soiling, otherwise clean. Modern three quarter red morocco over cloth boards, five raised bands, gilt decoration and rules, top edge gilt, with original cloth gilt covers and spine bound in, marble endpapers.

With the leather bookplate of Doris Louise Benz (1907-84). The Benz collection, which included English literature, manuscripts and drawings, was sold at Christie's in 1984. Slight age-toning to top edge of boards and spine, a touch of rubbing to lower tips; overall, a very handsome, solid copy.

Bookplate of collector, Aubrey Heywood Jones, (1892), designed and etched, and with original verse by Herbert Jones, for a collection of folk-lore books. Half dark brown calf over pebbled cloth boards. Covers scuffed, rubbed, and slightly soiled, bit of chipping at spine ends, corners rounded and the front board re-attached. Prelims and endpages browned, occasional thumbing, otherwise a good and clean copy. Includes an original pen and ink drawing signed by Alfred Crowquill. [180 x 220mm]. Watermarked, cream laid paper, with pen & ink illustration to one panel with the caption: "My dear Miss Pardoe / I should be proud to possess your / hand . . . writing. Your Admirerer / Alfred Crowquill". "No. 40" is written in ink at the top right, and a very, very tiny embossed circular stamp is at the top left. "Miss Pardoe" is likely the English poet, novelist, historian and traveller, Julia Pardoe (1806-1862), a contemporary of Crowquill, who often had articles in the same monthly magazines with him. Two faint horizontal fold lines, else near fine, clean original drawing.

1st Edition. 13.8 x 19 cm faded purple cloth with gilt and blind stamped decoration and gilt stamped titles to the front and spine. All edges gilt, pale orange endpapers, 188pp with 6 full page black and white illustrations and numerous others within the text. The boards are a little faded on the front and spine. With pushing and rubbing to the corners and spine tips. Internally there are two gift inscriptions dated 1862 and 1915. The rear free endpaper has been replaced at some point. There is some spotting throughout, more obviously to the prelims and pages facing the full page illustrations. An unusual collection of tales with a moral.
