Defects to note are library number on the spine with the pocket inside back cover, title page has tape repairs along edges; several of the photos have tape repairs along lower edges and damp stain along these edges. Map is missing. Book is the report of Captain Abercombie's expedition on the Copper River in Alaska. The report includes information on ports, minerals and the description of areas along the Copper River. The first section of the book is text describing the expedition and consist of 169 pages. The second part of the book is a large number of black and white photos taken along the trip. This section has 168 photos. Book.

Binding tight; contents in pristine condition and appear unread. In 1989, Capt. W. R. Abercrombie, Second United States Infantry was commanded to lead an expedition to open up a military road to Copper Center, and from the last-named point by the most direct and practicable route to Eagle City. . This expedition will cover as much territory as possible, and will collect and incorporate in the reports all information that may lie valuable to the development of the country explored regarding topographical features, available routes of travel, feasible routes for railroad construction, adaptability for agriculture and stock raising, mineral resources, timber, fuel, food products, and the stock best suited for food and transportation purposes; the number, location, and condition of the natives of the territory explored. Quarter red leather and marbled boards, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, marbled front and rear endpapers, 169 [1] pp.,plus 168 pages of photographic plates, one large folding map tipped in at the rear of the volume, all edges are marbled. This informative and lavishly illustrated account of the expedition led by Abercrombie, in order to establish an all-American route from Valdez, Alaska on Prince William Sound, and opening up a military road to Copper Centre by the most direct route to Eagle City, and the gold fields of northern Alaska. It was the first direct land route into the Alaska interior, and included 13 detailed subreports which revealed the brutal hardships suffered by ?Stampeders? attempting to traverse the terrain, and Abercrombie actually concluded many of the miners were mentally deranged, and later established a hospital in Valdez. Covers rubbed, internally clean and tight, else a very good, bright and tight copy.
