Kerman, Joseph, 1924-2014. Opera as drama - COPY WITH MARKINGS. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1988, New and revised edition, xvii, 232pp., PAPERBACK, light vertical pencil lines in margins on numerous pages at start of text, in chapter four, and some scattered pages, deep crease and crack in spine at pages 67 and 167, markings are done lightly, remains quite usable reading copy, COPY WITH MARKINGS. "Throughout the history of opera, if not quite continuously, there have been some who have taken opera's dramatic potential seriously and others who have not. It seems to be the case that over the last thirty years Opera as Drama has helped keep the serious position alive. I hope it will continue to do so in this new edition."-- From the foreword to the new edition. Passionate, witty, brilliant, Opera as Drama, although published over thirty years ago, remains one of the most controversial, thought-provoking, and entertaining works of operatic criticism ever written. For this new edition, the first since the book's original publication, the author has prepared a new foreword and provided emendations and additions that take into account some of the critical reaction to the book. He has also added a new chapter on operatic criticism. Updated yet still retaining the verve of the original, this new edition will be indispensable reading for all students and lovers of opera - CONTENTS: Prologue : Opera as drama -- Orpheus : the neoclassic vision -- The dark ages -- Action and the musical continuity -- Mozart -- Verdi's Otello : traditional opera and the image of Shakespeare -- Opera as sung play -- Opera as symphonic poem -- Retrenchment : Wozzeck and The Rake's Progress -- Drama and the alternative -- Epilogue : On operatic criticism. 9780520062740 ISBN 0520062744.

Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Volume XLI, number 2. Reprint first published in 1954. The author of this source seeks to determine the factors which are responsible for the conversion of individual Navajo to one or another religious sect. This source treats principally the activities of the Mormons, who are settled among the Navajos at Rimrock, and a less conspicuous but also influential sect which he designates 'Galilean.' Through the analysis of survey-sample results and of life-history materials, his interpretation of Navajo conversion experience rests largely upon psychological rather than sociological foundations. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 309 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black boards with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Deaf N.Y.C. detective Joe Binney (A Piece of the Silence, etc.) goes south--for an unshapely but mostly absorbing mixture of small-town charm, big-time embezzlement, and hefty gothic secrets. Joe's initial client is a Manhattan publisher--who wants to know why textbook salesman Charlie Welland died in a car wreck down in Caunotaucarius County. . .and what happened to $150,000 worth of missing books. Few of the locals give the Northern shamus a warm welcome, of course; he very nearly becomes a hit-and-run victim. But it isn't long before Joe zeroes in on the slimy local politico who had teamed up with the salesman in a nasty scare (leading to greedy murder). Meanwhile, however, there's been another not-so-accidental death in town: splendid Miss Rutledge, Secretary of Education and village historian, is the sole fatality when a civil building blows up--and the prime suspect is pathetic loon Honey Lewis, who's been seriously disturbed since he suffered an enigmatic childhood-trauma down in the local mine. So Joe, hired now by Honey's father, sets out to determine who really blew up that building. And the investigation soon focuses on Lewis family-history, on mine-ownership politics, and above all on the causes of Honey's bygone psychic scars. Two mini-mysteries stitched together, only half-smoothly--but the talented Livingston again provides a rich supporting cast, patches of taut action (Joe scuba-dives an abandoned mine), and strong narration for somber yet humorous Joe (who downplays his handicap effectively). Condition: Remainder mark at heal end pages. Jacket points rubbed, small closed tear at front heal corner else a near fine copy in a very good to fine jacket.
