William Tecumseh Sherman, born on February 8, 1820, was a prominent Union general during the American Civil War. Renowned for his aggressive and innovative military tactics, Sherman played a pivotal role in the Union's victory. His famous "March to the Sea" campaign involved capturing and destroying Atlanta before embarking on a strategic march across Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean. This campaign inflicted significant damage on Confederate infrastructure and supplies. Sherman's understanding of the harsh realities of war is encapsulated in his famous quote, "War is hell." Following the Civil War, he continued his military career and held various roles, including serving as the Commanding General of the United States Army.
