WILTON HOUSE Wiltshire ENGLAND - c. 1870 Color Print fine art print " FO Morris antique prints colored engravings circa 1870s ANTIQUE COLOR PRINT Title: WILTON HOUSE Approximate Image Size: 5 X 7 1/2 inches Approximate Overall Size: 8 X 10 1/2 inches Brilliant color print. Printed and engraved by by B. Fawcett, Driffield. This beautiful attractive colour plate originates from and is one of a Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of The Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britian and Ireland as presented by F. O. Morris. A greater proportion of the drawings which originated from the publication were by Alexander F. Lydon, and printed from coloured wood-blocks using the Baxter process by Benjamin Fawcett. Published by William Mackenzie, Ludgate Hill, Edinburgh and Dublin CONDITION: Excellent Condition. The colors are brilliant, rich and bright. Reverse side is blank and printed on heavier quality paper. Wilton House is an imposing structure, and the grounds immediately adjoin the town of Wilton, which is pleasantly siuated on the junction of the rivers nadder and Wiley, from the latter of which it derives its name. It was rebuilt, as to its present front, by Inigo Jones, a part of the previous mansion having been destroyed by fire in 1648. - In the year 773 an abbey was founded here by Weolkstan, Earl of Ellandum. In 830 it was completed, when Egbert, King of England, converted it into a priory for thirteen nuns, and his sister Aburga was made prioress.
