1773 COPPER ENGRAVING RARE ANTIQUE BOOKPLATE PRINT .Thaxted Church, situated on a hill in the village of Thaxted, close to Stansted, is one of the grandest churches in Essex. It is 183 feet long and 87 feet wide, and its size, beautiful architecture and magnificent spire has lead some to refer to it as the 'Cathedral of Essex'. Building began in 1340 and the church was fully completed in 1510, with an early 16th century roof. Thaxted church was built in the form of a Cathedral, with two porches; the King's and the Duke's. There are two side chapels, the north dedicated to Sir Thomas of Canterbury, and the south to Mary, mother of Jesus and his maternal godmother, Ann. This has lead to it being referred to as the 'Lady Chapel'. The south transept is dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandra, and the north to St Lawrence. Since 1858 the chapel has been the home of the Lincoln Organ, which is the larger of two organs in the chapel. It was built by Henry Lincoln in 1820 and came from St John's Chapel. The smaller organ, 'Conrad Noel Memorial Organ', is beneath the tower arch and was built in 1952 by Cedric Arnold with money raised after the death of the late vicar of Thaxted, Fr Conrad Noel (1910-42). The spire is said to be the only medieval stone spire in Essex and was originally 183 feet but is now only 181 feet. This was due to an error when it was rebuilt in 1822. It has been twice destroyed by lightening and each time was built up again to the original design. PUBLISHED DATE 1773 LONDON PRINTED FOR R. GOADBY SOLD BY J.
