Descripción
The storming of Chapultepec was a pivotal event during the Mexican-American War, taking place in September 1847. As part of the broader campaign to capture Mexico City, the United States Army, led by General Winfield Scott, encountered strong resistance from Mexican defenders at Chapultepec Castle. Situated on a hill on the western outskirts of Mexico City, Chapultepec was a formidable fortification. The battle unfolded on September 12-13, 1847, with intense fighting around the castle and its surroundings. Mexican cadets from the Young Military Academy, famously known as "Los Niños Héroes" (the Boy Heroes), played a significant role in the defense. The American forces, facing determined resistance, managed to breach the walls and ultimately raised the U.S. flag on Chapultepec. The success of this assault, often remembered in the U.S. Marine Corps Hymn as the "Halls of Montezuma," contributed to the eventual capture of Mexico City and played a role in the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war and resulted in significant territorial concessions to the United States.
