The Siege of Veracruz, a crucial episode in the Mexican-American War, unfolded from March 9 to March 29, 1847, as part of General Winfield Scott's campaign to capture Mexico City. Located on the eastern coast of Mexico, Veracruz was a strategic port that the United States Army targeted for its amphibious assault. The American forces, under the command of Scott, initiated a relentless bombardment of the city, leading to extensive damage and disruption. The siege involved a combination of naval forces and land-based troops, including divisions commanded by generals such as David E. Twiggs and Matthew C. Perry. The Mexican defenders, known as Tropas Invictas, faced overwhelming odds against the powerful and well-organized U.S. forces. The coastal defenses proved challenging, but ultimately, the siege resulted in the surrender of Veracruz. The fall of the city marked a significant victory for the United States and set the stage for further advances into Mexican territory. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed later in 1848, concluded the war, with Mexico ceding a substantial amount of territory to the United States. Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
