(Western United States: Texas) NOTICE OF QUARANTINE. GALVESTON, TEXAS, MAY 15TH, 1873; signed in type, "C. W. HURLEY, Mayor." Galveston, Texas: Mayor's Office, Galveston, Texas, 1873. FIRST EDITION. Letterpress broadside, 13-15/16" x 8-1/2", with one horizontal and two vertical folds, two inconsequential short closed tears to margin of bottom edge and one to left and right margin at horizontal fold, and offsetting from a manuscript to verso for what is a clean, near fine copy of the broadside. This broadside represents the Galveston posting of a statewide quarantine in reaction to the latest in a series of horrific yellow fever epidemics which had plagued the Texas coast. Not until the new century was it proved that yellow fever was spread by mosquitoes, at which point the breeding grounds were drained, and the disease virtually eliminated from the United States. The condition of the broadside is NEAR FINE. No copies located on OCLC/WorldCat; Winkler & Friend Imprints No. 3210, tracing only a single copy (Texas State Archives and Library). EXCEEDINGLY RARE.
