Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, served from 1850 to 1853. Born in a log cabin in upstate New York in 1800, Fillmore rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in American politics. He initially trained as a lawyer and entered politics as a member of the Whig Party. Fillmore served in various roles, including in the New York State Assembly, the U.S. House of Representatives, and as Vice President under President Zachary Taylor. Upon Taylor's sudden death in 1850, Fillmore assumed the presidency, inheriting a nation deeply divided over issues such as slavery and territorial expansion. Despite his efforts to promote compromise and maintain peace, Fillmore's presidency was marked by controversy, particularly his support for the Compromise of 1850, which included the Fugitive Slave Act. While Fillmore's tenure as President was relatively short and he failed to secure his party's nomination for re-election in 1852, his presidency is remembered for his attempts to navigate the turbulent political landscape of the era. After leaving office, Fillmore remained active in public life, advocating for education and founding the University of Buffalo. He passed away in 1874, leaving behind a complex legacy that continues to be debated by historians. 1846 Steel Engraving - Antique Print.
