Oblong 8vo. 8.75 x 5.25 pp. Lacks title page. Half-bound in original black morocco over marbled boards with black morocco title label, gilt, on front board. Extremities worn, and ink stain throughout on upper right corner, not affecting the plate images; otherwise a very good copy. Three original sketches are loosely inserted. Bookplate of Mark Dineley. Illustrated by 22 etchings by Moses with captions. Exceptionally, this album is accompanied by 3 original sepia ink drawings by Moses, including the original of 'Rocks near Sandgate' (4.75 x 2.5 inches), which appears in the album. The two other accomplished sketches, in similar size and format, are H.M. Brig 'Sparrow', under Fort Jerome, St. Domingo (4.75 x 2.75 inches), which includes depictions of HMS Argo, a 44 gun (Fifth rate), and a named (but so far undeciphered) Gunboat, and one very busy but uncaptioned shipping scene, possibly in the Downs off Deal.(4.5 x 2 inches). These drawings amply demonstrate Moses' mastery of the depiction of seagoing craft and add immeasurably to the impact of the album. They are mounted on off-white card. The Marine Sketch Book depicts scenes from the Medway, Ramsgate, Dover, the Downs, the Dutch coast, Cowes, Portsmouth and Southsea, including numerous Men o' War, and in one instance, a paddle steamer. This copy lacks a title page and four of the 26 etchings which are recorded in the National Maritime Museum and V and A copies, To compensate for this, however, two original drawings of shipping by Moses are included. Henry Moses (c.1782-1870) was highly regarded as a draughtsman and engraver and was well known for his several series of views of shipping, and coastal views. He used his skills as an engraver to great effect in capturing buildings and human activities in his sketches with faultless perspective and his accurately drawn views that record, in almost photographic detail, life before the widespread use of photography. He published several other books including 'Picturesque Views of Ramsgate' (1817) which include busily populated images of ships and the town and harbour.
