Descripción
Published 1765-1783. Original engraving on hand-made paper, produced for the first edition of Buffon's Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere, this being plate number 493. These plates were also issued separately between 1765 and 1783 by the Parisian publisher Panckoucke, without text, under the general title of Les planches enluminées. Cf. Anker 76; cf. Balis 40; cf. Ellis 411; Christine Jackson Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World p.356; cf. Nissen IVB 158; cf. Ronsil 413. +++ The (narrowly-spaced) laid lines of the hand-crafted paper run vertically if held against the light. These ?thick? lines are usually referred to as ?chain lines?, the thin lines are called ?wire lines? as they correspond to the position of the wire mesh underneath the paper layer. This is an indication of the original size of the paper before the pages have cut out of it. So in this case the paper is derived from folio or quarto size sheets. +++ Hand coloring delicately and expertly executed. Paper size 12 x 8.5 Ins., plate mark 10 x 8.3 Ins. Paper with some very faint foxing, else clean and bright. +++ Martinet, under the supervision of Edmonde Daubenton, drew and engraved the plates for Buffons first edition (later on a series of black and white plates was drawn by de Seve). +++ THE PLATE OFFERED HERE is part of a unique collection of 35 similar engravings taken from the same origin. +++ If you want more information please use the "Ask Bookseller a question" button and I'll be pleased to help. +++ A fine collector's piece. N° de ref. del artículo 008319
